Driss Oukabir, Barcelona Attacks Suspect, Receives Death Threats in Prison

Rabat – After being place in a Madrid prison over suspected involvement in the recent Barcelona terror attacks, Driss Oukabir has been receiving death threats from inmates, reports Spanish media.The 28-year-old suspect is currently detained in prison without bail in relation to the car attacks in the Catalonia city, which resulted in the death of 15 people.Prisoners at Soto del Real prison have been threatening to kill him, according to local media reports. Upon hearing of his arrival to jail last Tuesday, the inmates started issuing public threats, with one saying they would “slit [his] throat when [he goes] out to the patio,” while others shouted “Fu*king terrorist,” security sources told El Pais.Officials have detained Oukabir in an isolation unit. He has requested special protection due to the threats received from inmates.Oukabir testified last Tuesday before the judge of the National Court for his alleged participation in the attacks in Barcelona.The accused, arrested on the same afternoon of the attacks, has admitted that he rented the van that was used in the massive rampage of La Rambla, although he believed it was going to be used for a house move and not an attack.The suspect will be charged with murder, membership in a terror organization, and the possession of explosives, a Spanish judge stated, according to public broadcaster RTVE.Oukabir’s younger brother, Moussa, was shot by the police early Friday morning after he was identified as one of the five suspected terrorists involved in the attacks.One of the suspects, Mohammed Aalla, will be released on bail after the evidence against him was considered too weak.
